Main activities include research, development and innovation in cooperation with the University of Akureyri and other institutes and companies in the northern part of the country and elsewhere. Matís is located in the Research Instiute Centre at Borgir. Facilities have been built up to be able to monitor pollutants like pesticides and PCB substances in Icelandic food products. In general, research is in the field of microbiology, chemistry, immuno-histology, molecular biology and image analysis of foods.
Emphasis has been on getting students to work at Matís on research-linked studies for Masters degree in cooperation with both icelandic and foreign universities, research stations and companies.
Three specialists, one lab assistant and one student studying for a Masters deegree work at Matís in Akureyri. Research group leader and branch manager is Rannveig Björnsdóttir, rannveig.bjornsdottir()matis.is, who also is an accociate professor at the University of Akureyri.
