The goal is to conduct microbiological analysis on food, potable water, medicine, feed and environmental samples as well as supplying specialized and efficient service and consultation to the private and public sectors. All service and research provided is performed with certified professionalism and analytical research methods. Microbiological research is conducted to monitor animal farming and slaughter and general hygiene at restaurants and food production companies. We are involved with: quality and safety testing for pharmaceutical companies and other sectors, developing new methods in microbiological analysis and has a part in the development of an international system for conducting microbiological analysis.

Microbiological analysis involves most parasites that can be found in food. An important part of the divisions work is the testing and development of method; research into the performance of micro-organism in and around food, monitoring micro-organisms and the effects certain hygiene measures have on them.

Chemical research is performed on contaminants and pesticides. This includes researching and testing for trace elements in seafood and various pesticides in vegetables and fruit. A general service in microbiological, physical, and chemical analysis is conducted by using certified methodology - there are 35 certified ways to conduct microbiological and chemical testing. The division frequently supplies pharmaceutical and food production companies, inspection agencies and other divisions within Matiís services in research and analysis. Testing at Matís is performed in Reykjavík and Neskaupstaður.
