Research focus is on the isolation of microalgae and cyanobacteria from the Icelandic nature; sea, land and fresh water and to scan and isolate valuable bioactive compounds.

The divisions' main emphasis is: the reconstruction of methodology, knowledge and equipment used for the production of microalgae and cyanobacteria, gathering samples of microalgae and cyanobacteria for the evaluation of bio-diversity, researching the environmental factors important for the growth of microalgae and cyanobacteria and exploring different methods for isolation and purification.
