The main function of Value Chain, Processing and Aquaculture, is to assist its customers in increasing their efficiency in producing food products and the value of the production. The division works on development projects related to the value chain as a whole or particular aspects of it. The basis of the division's work is that food originates in raw materials and goes through processing, which adds value. The end point is the consumer's table, where the consumer gets a certain quality of product that meets his expectations.
One of the division's biggest emphasis is research on aquaculture, to improve quality and increase business efficiency. The research involves close cooperation with companies, universities and domestic researchers, for the purpose of building up the broadest possible knowledge useful to both Icelandic and foreign companies engaging in aquaculture.
The division's projects are primarily done for and with domestic food and service companies in the food industry. The division provides consultancy on solving problems of food production and sees to research aimed at developing new products, new technology and new markets. This lays the foundation for additional income in food production and better performance.
The division's employees possess diverse knowledge of different parts of the value chain. Examples include product traceability, packaging, transport technology, storage technology, etc. Knowledge of one kind of food production is also utilized in development projects in other production areas in the industry. Thus, knowledge and experience are accumulated that is passed on to domestic food producers, as well as foreign research and development projects that the division's employees participate in.
