Genetic diversity of the Icelandic settlement chicken
The main aim of the project is to perform analysis of the genetic diversity within the indigenous chicken population which originates from the original Icelandic settlement chickens. The project will work towards the preservation of the genetic diversity of the population as well as to answer various questions regarding the genetic composition of the population. There is interested in knowing which birds have mixed with foreign breeds, but that knowledge is a precondition to maintain an pure Icelandic breed and therefore will information of this kind will greatly beneficial for breeders in Iceland. The project is therefore an important part in preserving the Icelandic chicken population.
