Research on bioactive substances in a cell model
The main goal of the project is to set up a cellular antioxidant assay in the new established Cell Lab at Matis Biotechnology Center in Saudarkrokur , North Iceland. Antioxidant activities of natural hydrolysates derived from fish have shown great promise in in vitro studies. However, these in vitro studies are all based on chemical antioxidant activity assays that have been criticised for their ability to predict in vivo activity. Therefore, there is a great interest in performing them in cells as cell cultures provide an approach that is more similar to biological systems. This will be a major step forward in the research of antioxidant properties of fish and seafood based bioactive compounds and will be critical to take this research area to the next level, which are animal and human clinical trials.
